I also want to mention the launch of a new night (I believe it will be every other month) called Shine on Saturday, the brainchild of Phase 3 Events and One Night Events.  Touted as "Seattle's Only Superclub Experience," the venue is huge, the sound will be massive, the DJs global, and the environment plush.  I know they've been working on this event for awhile, bringing in new furniture, decorations, and sound to a venue that is used only sparingly.  From what I understand, it will be a complete transformation and an experience that you'll only find in the bigger nightlife cities like Vegas, Miami, New York, and LA.  They've already sold out all of their VIP tables, and ticket sales are brisk.  Look for about 1000 people in attendance!  For complete info, check here:  http://www.nwtekno.org/showthread.php?t=143283.  My advice:  go check out Shine for an incredible new experience, and head to Contour for afterhours!

It's now midway through the month, and I have a few upcoming gigs.  This Saturday night (Jan 16/17), I have my monthly residency at Contour afterhours.  Details here.  There is usually a great crowd for afterhours.

Then, next month, I have 3 shows so it's going to be a busy February!

Then the next night on February 6th, Joshua James and I return to See Sound Lounge for what will undoubtedly be an early highlight for 2010.

  I also wanted to give a quick plug for my friend Jason LeMaitre (who a lot of you know).  Jason has entered himself into the Let's Mix It Next Generation DJ contest.  Top prizes include a management contract, gigs at the 2010 WMC, and some new Pioneer Pro DJ gear.  You can go to the mix he has entered into the contest here.  Listen to it and vote for it (if you like it).  He needs a little less than 100 more votes before the end of January to qualify for the next round.  My personal opinion is that it's one of the best mixes I've heard in the past year.  He also mixed in some of his own edits and mashups.  You'll have to register on the website, but it's super quick (name and email address), and I think you'll find many more mixes you like too.

Did that summon images of the opening scene from Miami Vice? Well that's EXACTLY what the next Summer Sessions on Saturday, September 19th is all about! Except that you'll be on the Islander Yacht, it will be night time (so no sunglasses needed), and we're not really going to Cuba (as far as we know -- might be a good idea to bring a passport just in case). But other than that -- exactly the same!

Break out your white Armani jacket, linen pants and pastel colored T-shirt, don't forget the five o'clock shadow and loafers, but do forget the socks. For the ladies, scrunchies, shoulder shirts, tights and neon should provide that touch of 80's that we all grew up with. And don't try to pretend like you don't have these clothes in your closet -- we all know you bust them out from time to time, reliving your glory days.

When in doubt, ask yourself, "What would Sonny and Rico do?"

Come celebrate Johnny Monsoon getting another year older, while you get all nostalgic and feel 20 years younger (drinking helps too). Loading starts at 8:30 and departure is at 9:30 sharp. But not to get too caught up in past performances, let's look forward to another one with Joshua James and I on September 26th.

In fact, he can't even spell his name.  What a loser. 

But seriously, moving on to music.  I had two shows last Saturday night - one at O'Asian (which is one of the coolest venues in Seattle - how had I never been there?!) and one at Contour.  It was a white party thrown by promoters that used to throw big events a few years back (when shiny shirts and trance ruled all).  The crowd was extremely attractive (I better head to the gym right now in fact).  I had to make some pretty big adjustments in music.  I started off with very loungy tech house and deep house.  It was early, so I wasn't expecting a ton of dance floor action.  As the night progressed, I brought up the musical intensity, but soon realized that wasn't going to work.  I weathered a few hip hop and salsa requests (apparently, the venue was a hip hop and salsa venue before being remodeled, AND I guess they had countless fights on their hip hop nights - imagine that).  In the past, I probably would have been frustrated and kept on playing a typical opening set of tech house and deep house with a few vocals here and there.  But I think times have changed.  I'm a DJ.  I'm not a jukebox, but it is my job to produce an environment conducive for people to have fun.  First up was Mylo's "In My Arms" (King Unique Re-edit), which is always a crowd pleaser and something I keep on hand at all times.  That brought an immediate positive response from the crowd and the promoter.  I ended up dropping in Groove Armada's "Love Sweet Sound" as well as Stanton Warriors "Shake It Up" (Hook & Sling Remix).  I even dropped some Chromeo.  These are all older tracks (in my world of always looking for the newest cuts), but they are some of my favorites.  I wasn't planning on playing them, but I'm a DJ and my job is to improvise.  I would much rather get a room full of people dancing to some more mainstream-friendly (not mainstream, but mainstream-friendly) tracks than alienate the crowd and play my usual sound (which is a bit more underground).  My friend Carl's goal was always to get the ladies dancing because he knew everyone else would follow.  I always remembered that.  To do that while maintaining your integrity as an artist is a challenge, but I like a challenge.
